The Minister for Education, Hon Dr Yaw Osei Adutum, this weekend, visited the technical working group responsible for reviewing the National Teachers’ Standards, National Teacher Education Curriculum Framework, and National Teacher Education and Assessment policy.
This review, led by the National Teaching Council in collaboration with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, aims to enhance the quality of teacher education and improve learning outcomes in pre-tertiary education.
The committee comprises a diverse range of technical experts selected from universities, including those engaged in teacher training, as well as representatives from the National Teaching Council, the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Technical Vocational Education and Training Service (GTVETS),the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA), the Conference of Heads of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), and various teacher unions.
The Minister highlighted that this inclusive selection process ensures that decision-making regarding teacher education is representative of all stakeholders.
During his address, the Minister expressed his appreciation to the committee members for their dedication and stressed the importance of their support in implementing his transformative education agenda. He emphasized the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Ghana’s education system as a key focus.
The Minister envisions Ghana becoming a leading technology country in Africa, exporting drones to other African nations.
This integration of STEM education is expected to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to compete in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Furthermore, the Minister discussed the need to rethink the role of Colleges of Education in order to empower their graduates.
He underscores the need to collaborate with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (G-TEC) to elevate selected Colleges of Education as independent and parallel institutions to universities. He also emphasized the importance of engaging universities in this direction, fostering cooperation and synergy between the two sectors.
This comprehensive reform of teacher education and the integration of STEM subjects into the curriculum showcases the Ministry of Education’s commitment to improving the quality of education in Ghana.
