DJ Azonto petitions President Mahama over measures to safeguard creative rights

Ghanaian Amapiano sensation DJ Azonto has written a petition to President John Dramani Mahama to institute more measures to safeguard creative property in Ghana.

DJ Azonto’s petition comes in the wake of an alleged use of his popular “Alla” term in Medikal’s “Shoulder” single.

The “Fa No Fom” hitmaker indicated that there was no authorisation given to Medikal for the use of the “Alla” term, thereby seeking $100 million in compensation.

In a long letter sighted by GhanaWeb, DJ Azonto, through his management team, Rolls Royce Family, stated that the rising cases of intellectual theft in the creative space needed urgent action.

“As citizens of this beloved country, we are writing to formally petition your high office regarding a growing issue within the Ghanaian creative industry, which is the uncredited and unauthorised use of intellectual property,” excerpts from the letter said.

The letter also advocated for the implementation of a symbolic cultural levy, dubbed the “One Shoulder One Cedi Tax,” which would be used to support emerging creatives.
