Scotland is steeped in history, culture and stretches of stunning rural landscapes, which is what makes it such a unique travel destination. The Scottish Borders, in particular, is full of quaint towns, interesting architecture, and so much more. Throughout this article, we’ll be focusing our attention on Melrose, which is home to the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills.
The Scottish Borders
As the name suggests, the Scottish Borders is a council area that sits between the border of England and Edinburgh city. Given its location, the area is extremely popular with visitors from England, whether they’re making their way to the Northern regions or setting up camp in one of the many boutique hotels Scottish Borders to experience the 1,500+ miles of walking routes.
Things to Do in Melrose
Even though there are many historic towns to see in the Scottish Borders, we believe Melrose is where the true beauty lies. To get your trip started the right way, head to Melrose Abbey, which is one of four 12th-century abbeys in the area. Having been attacked, damaged, and rebuilt, Melrose Abbey is the best-preserved – even if it is in ruins.
Next up on our list of exploration, is Abbotsford, which is the fairytale-like former home of celebrated novelist Sir Walter Scott. What started off as an old farmhouse has been transformed over the years into a stunning Baronial-style cottage, which has been restored and turned into a museum.
Saving the best until last, we recommend hiking Eildon Hills, where you can enjoy 360° views of the Scottish Borders from the 1,385ft peak. Starting from Melrose Abbey car park, you’ll need around 3-4 hours to get the most out of this experience.
Where to Eat in Melrose
For a decent lunch, Dalgetty’s Tearoom serves some of the most delicious baked goods in the Scottish Borders. In the evening, the places to be are The Hoebridge, Provender, and Seasons, which will all leave you ready for the next day.
We haven’t discussed breakfast because you’ll find some of the best bed and breakfast Melrose options, which we discuss further below.
Places to Stay in Melrose
Sleep is essential for enjoying your trip, and if you are looking for a boutique guest house in Melrose or the neighbouring town Bowden, there is plenty to choose from, meaning you won’t have to travel far to get your next day started. There’s a diverse range of hotels in Melrose, but we recommend staying at a boutique bed and breakfast because you’ll start your day right with delicious food.
If you prefer something other than a Melrose Scotland B&B, you’ll find private cottages, flats, house shares, and campsites. However, with outstanding customer service and freshly cooked breakfasts, we still recommend choosing a B&B Scotland.
Melrose is the perfect example of authentic Scotland, and it’s highly regarded because of its natural beauty and lens into the past. This guide by no means covers every aspect of this town, but you’ll find more than enough places to explore for a short trip.
