Yaw Boateng Gyan, the former National Organizer of NDC, has categorically stated that ex-President Jerry John Rawlings is the only founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He explained that the party’s constitution clearly stipulates that Mr Rawlings is the founder of the party, and, so, persons disputing that fact should stop making such comments.
A former Chairman of the NDC, Dr Obed Asamoah, had said a few months ago that Mr Rawlings did not found the NDC as widely thought.
According to Dr Asamoah, at the time of filing for the registration of the NDC, the ex-President was still in the Ghana Armed Forces and could not have represented any district as a founding father.
“I dealt with the application of the NDC to the Electoral Commission for registration. The law at the time, and still the law is the same, is that you must have founders from the different districts… to sign the papers.
“I can show you the duplicates of the papers. They are here right now because I dealt with that whole process, and President Rawlings’ name is not on that list,” Dr Asamoah said in an interview.
But speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Friday, 4 May, Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan said: “The party’s constitution states emphatically that Rawlings is the founder of the party, it is clear. He brought the party and that is what I know, and, so, if anybody is disputing that he should bring the evidence.”
He added: “Rawlings is the Chairman of the Council of Elders of the party. You may disagree with him on some of the issues he says, but that doesn’t take away the fact that he is the founder of the party.”
