Lionel Messi is reportedly further away than ever from renewing his Barcelona contract in a dramatic change of events.
The Nou Camp legend, 34, is currently a free agent, but was widely expected to sign a new deal and extend his 21-year stay at the club.
However, Spanish newspaper Marca now claims a renewal is ‘almost impossible’, creating the very real possibility Barca could lose Messi following conversations on Thursday.
According to the report, the La Liga giants are already considering how to communicate news of a potential departure to its supporters.
Negotiations with Messi have been complicated due to financial problems at the club.
It was understood the Argentina star agreed to take a 50 per cent pay cut in order to agree a new five-year contract.
But the situation has been made more difficult by La Liga’s agreement with CVC for a £2.3billion investment into Spain’s top flight.
Barca are thought to be opposed to the deal, as it would officially end their pursuit of the European Super League, which they continue to push for alongside Real Madrid and Juventus, despite widespread anger towards the proposal.
With ongoing attempts to balance their wage bill, it is now considered impossible for Barca to agree fresh terms with Messi, while also rejecting the CVC deal and continuing their Super League bid.
The developments leave president Joan Laporta in an awkward position, having been elected on the promise of keeping Messi at the club.
