Former Liverpool player Harry Kewell has compared Mohamed Salah to Barcelona star Lionel Messi and believes the Egyptian ace should be targeting the Ballon d’Or this year.
Salah, 25, has been delightful to watch at Anfield since joining the club this summer from Roma, proving an absolute bargain for the £34million it took to sign.
Salah is currently leading the race for the Premier League Golden Boot and European Golden Shoe with 28 league goals this term. Also he has 36 goals in all competitions for the Reds.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals than Salah this season – and only one more at 37 – and Kewell believes Liverpool’s newest hero will be challenging for the Real Madrid star’s crown if he maintains his current form.
“People are saying about Player of the Year, but I’d even go that next step.
“If he was to have a fantastic World Cup, gets a couple of goals and plays well, and then continues again next season, why not go for the Ballon d’Or?
“He’s got the goals, I don’t see why he couldn’t win it.” Harry Kewell said.
“He has this amazing dribbling ability, and defenders are scared of it,” added Kewell.
“That’s the key with Salah – he drives at people, he’s chopping, turning, dribbling and people just don’t know how to deal with him.” said Kewell, who made 139 appearances for Liverpool.
