Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
The Legal Counsel for Chairman Wontumi, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed this during an interview on Accra-based Neat FM on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
According to him, although bail was approved late Tuesday evening, procedural delays meant the legal team could not meet the conditions in time, resulting in Wontumi spending the night in custody.
Andy Appiah-Kubi, yesterday, also revealed that his client had been hospitalised after enduring long hours of interrogation by state security officers.
Speaking to the press, he said:
“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment. We haven’t completed the interrogation, so we will return to continue—hopefully tomorrow, if his condition improves. Otherwise, he will remain in the hospital until discharged by doctors.”
Mr Appiah-Kubi refuted claims that Wontumi had been mistreated during the arrest or while in custody, instead commending EOCO officials for their conduct.
“The officers at EOCO were exceptionally professional,” he noted, singling out EOCO Executive Director Raymond Archer for what he described as “an exemplary display of fairness and professionalism.”
