NDC vigilante group, the Hawks chase out Circuit Court Judge

Some members of the vigilante group, ‘the Hawks’, who are believed to have an affiliation with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Brong Ahafo Region reportedly chased out a Sunyani based Circuit Court Judge who was presiding over an assault case between one Sefa Kenneth of Hwidiem and Ahmed Usman.

The decision of the Hawks to chase the judge was to prevent him from remanding Ahmed Usman, who is a member of the Hawks and a known ally of the NDC Member of Parliament of Asutifi South, Collins Dauda.

Usman, who is the Brong Ahafo Regional NDC Treasurer, has been accused of assaulting one Sefa Kenneth of Hwidiem.

The NDC vigilante group also chased the Regional Police Prosecutor and beat up the Deputy Regional Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Shadrach Abrefa Mensa, one Mohammed Asoma and other members of the ruling party in the Region.

The Hawks, numbering about hundred, also allegedly threw stones at the vehicle of the District Chief Executive of Hwidem.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the NDC, Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo, who is also a former Regional Minister, former Municipal Chief Executive for Goaso, Mohammed Kwaku Doku, NDC Regional Communications Director, Tuffour, NDC Regional Organizer and Tano North and South Constituency Executives of NDC, were all present when the rioting by the Hawks took place.

The assaulted NPP Youth Organizer and other members who sustained injuries were sent to the Tano North District Assembly for protection and later escorted to Sunyani by police.

The Hawks were outdoored in parts of the country during the NDC’s regional elections to elect its regional executives.

The General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia defended the emergence of vigilante groups within the party.

He said the emergence of groups like Hawks is “an appropriate natural response” to the failure of the Akufo-Addo government to rein in its party vigilante groups and “I endorse it fully”.
