A mechanical fault forced a private helicopter carrying gold bars from Bibiani Chirano Gold Mine in the Western Region to land on a maize farm at Yanowa near Asamankese.
The helicopter was en route to Accra on Monday when the incident happened.
All four crew members aboard, including a Customs officer and two private security men, escaped unhurt in the incident, the police have reported.
The helicopter, registered No SA365C3-N5073, was transporting gold bars belonging to the Chirano Gold Mines to Accra when Capt. Abdul Salam detected a mechanical fault; forcing him to force land.
Another helicopter arrived later to airlift the boxes of gold and carried the distressed crew.
“Based on the information, the police quickly moved to the scene where the helicopter landed… the police were able to provide enough security on the ground to enable another helicopter that came later to transport the boxes of gold and the distressed crewmen.”
“As we speak, the gold has safely arrived in Accra with the crew members. So that is what happened,” DSP Tetteh recounted.
